Samenvatting:

Dit hoofdstuk-boek gaat over Laura en pa en bevat 8 hoofdstukken.
1. Kleine huis in het grote bos
Het gezin Ingalls woont in de blokhut in het bos. Pa zorgt voor vlees en het land, ma houdt het huis binnen gezellig. Als er wolven rondom het huis zitten, laat pa deze zien aan Laura, maar vertelt er meteen bij dat ze veilig is. Als pa een keer op tijd thuis is, speelt hij met Mary en Laura en kruipt over de grond om ze bang te maken. Daarna speelt hij op zijn viool.
2. Pa vertelt een verhaal
Pa vertelt graag verhalen en hij vertelt het verhaal van zichzelf, dat hij als jongen de koeien uit het bos moest halen en dat een keer vergat omdat hij teveel speelde in het bos. Hij hoorde een onbekend geluid en werd bang. Achteraf bleek het enge geluid een uil te zijn.
3. Een nieuw huis
De familie Ingalls is met de huifkar naar de prairie gegaan. Pa heeft het plekje gevonden voor hun nieuwe huis. Terwijl ma en de meisjes hun kampement proberen in te richten, haalt pa hout voor een nieuwe blokhut. OP een dag blijken ze een vrijgezelle buurman te hebben en hij heeft pa belooft om te komen helpen met de bouw van het huis. Het is een aardige man en de twee mannen samen bouwen het huis in een dag bijna helemaal af.
4. Een sterke deur
Pa maakt een stevige deur in het huis, zonder spijkers. Laura helpt waar ze kan. Het wordt een deur zonder klink, maar met een stukje leer, waarmee je van buiten de deur open kunt doen.
5. Het bouwen van de schoorsteen
Pa gaat naar de rivier om stenen te halen. Laura en Mary mogen mee en spelen een tijdje in het water. Pa heeft de stenen nodig om de schoorsteen te bouwen. Hij bouwt een hoge, stevige muur en het bovenste stuk wordt van hout. Als de schoorsteen klaar is, maakt ma een maaltijd klaar op het vuur
6. Het huis verder afmaken
Dan, op een dag, maakt pa het dak van het huis. Laura en Mary zoeken naar de spijkers die hij laat vallen. Ook maakt pa een houten vloer in het huis. Laura kijkt toe hoe pa dat doet.
7. Graven van de put
Nu moet pa nog een put graven, zodat het gezin altijd vers water heeft. Pa krijgt hulp van meneer Scott. Iedere ochtend gaan de mannen de put in om hem dieper te maken. Iedere morgen laat pa een brandende kaars naar beneden om te kijken of de lucht onder in de put nog fris is. Op een dag is meneer Scott eerder klaar dan pa en gaat aan het werk. Na een tijdje blijkt meneer Scott in de put te zijn flauwgevallen. Pa gaat in de put om hem te redden. Daarna laat pa aan Laura zien hoe hij de verkeerde stof uit de put haalt. Uiteindelijk bereiken de mannen het water en stroomt de put vol met fris water.
8. Pa gaat naar de stad
Nu ma en de meisjes een goed en veilig huis hebben en een put voor water kan pa naar de stad om zijn huiden te ruilen. Hij vertrekt vroeg in de morgen en blijft twee dagen weg. Zonder pa is de prairie maar stil en eenzaam. Het weer wordt slechter. De meisjes verwachten pa snel thuis, maar hij komt niet. Ma blijft de hele nacht wakker om te wachten op pa. Die ochtend is hij er wel en is iedereen weer blij. Pa heeft mooie dingen meegenomen uit de stad, zoals glas voor ramen.

Tekeningen:

De plaatjes van Renée Graef krijgen steeds meer een eigen karakter. Er is een plaatje van pa met een hand op Laura's schouder terwijl ze naar buiten staan te kijken in de blokhut. Een plaatje van kleine pa die door het bos rent en bang is van een uil. Een plaatje van een dansende meneer Edwards en pa die op zijn viool speelt en het gezin dat vrolijk meezingt bij het kampvuur. Laura die het touwtje door de nieuw deur trekt. Een plaatje van bovenaf van pa met de meisjes in de wagen, vlakbij een riviertje, terwijl de herten toekijken. Dan een plaatje van Laura die de blaadjes van een bloemetje blaast, Mary die in het gras zoekt naar spijkers en pa die op het huis bezig is met het dak maken. Dan een plaatje van pa die de kaars in de put laat en meneer Scott en Laura staan toe te kijken. Het laatste plaatje is van pa met Mary en Laura op schoot, ieder gewikkeld in een doek, en Jack ligt onder zijn stoel te slapen.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje met hoofdstukken over pa en Laura. Het gaat mij vooral om de plaatjes en die zijn mooi en lieflijk.

1. Little house in the big forest

The Ingalls family lives in the log cabin in the woods. Pa takes care of the meat and the land, Ma keeps the house cozy inside. If there are wolves around the house, Pa shows them to Laura, but immediately tells her that she is safe. Once Pa gets home on time, he plays with Mary and Laura and crawls on the floor to scare them. Then he plays his violin.

2. Pa tells a story

Pa likes to tell stories and he tells the story of himself, that as a boy he had to fetch the cows from the forest and once forgot because he played too much in the forest. He heard an unfamiliar sound and became afraid. Afterwards the scary sound turned out to be an owl.

3. A new house

The Ingalls family took the covered wagon to the prairie. Pa has found the spot for their new house. While Ma and the girls try to set up their camp, Pa gets wood for a new log cabin. One day they turn out to have a single neighbor and he has promised Pa to come and help build the house. He is a nice man and the two men together almost completely finish the house in one day.

4. A strong door

Pa makes a sturdy door in the house, without nails. Laura helps where she can. It will be a door without a handle, but with a piece of leather, with which you can open the door from the outside.

5. Building the chimney

Pa goes to the river to get stones. Laura and Mary are allowed to come along and play in the water for a while. Pa needs the bricks to build the chimney. He builds a high, sturdy wall and the top part is made of wood. When the chimney is ready, Ma prepares a meal on the fire

6. Finish the house

Then, one day, Pa fixes the roof of the house. Laura and Mary look for the nails he drops. Pa also makes a wooden floor in the house. Laura watches Pa do that.

7. Digging the well

Now Pa has to dig a well so that the family always has fresh water. Pa gets help from Mr. Scott. Every morning the men go into the well to make it deeper. Every morning Pa lowers a lighted candle to see if the air at the bottom of the well is still fresh. One day, Mr. Scott finishes before Pa and goes to work. After a while, Mr. Scott appears to have fainted in the well. Pa goes into the well to save him. Then Pa shows Laura how to get the wrong substance out of the well. Finally the men reach the water and the well fills with fresh water.

8. Pa goes to town

Now that Ma and the girls have a good, safe house and a well for water, Pa can go to town to trade his skins. He leaves early in the morning and will be gone for two days. Without Pa the prairie is quiet and lonely. The weather is getting worse. The girls expect Pa home soon, but he doesn't come. Ma stays up all night waiting for Pa. That morning he is there and everyone is happy again. Pa brought beautiful things from the city, such as glass for windows.

Drawings:

Renée Graef's pictures are increasingly taking on their own character. There is a picture of Pa with a hand on Laura's shoulder as they stand looking outside the cabin. A picture of little pa running through the woods and being afraid of an owl. A picture of a dancing Mr. Edwards and Pa playing his violin and the family happily singing along around the campfire. Laura pulling the string through the new door. A picture from above of Pa with the girls in the wagon, near a river, while the deer look on. Then a picture of Laura blowing the petals off a flower, Mary looking for nails in the grass and Pa working on the roof of the house. Then a picture of Pa leaving the candle in the well and Mr. Scott and Laura are watching. The last picture is of Pa with Mary and Laura on his lap, each wrapped in a cloth, and Jack sleeping under his chair.

Own opinion:

A small book with chapters about Pa and Laura. For me it's mainly about the pictures and they are beautiful and lovely.
