Samenvatting:

Dit boek begint met het einde van de 19de eeuw. Mansfield is de hele dag in rep en roer door het naderende einde van een eeuw. Rose blikt terug op de afgelopen weken waarin sommige Amerikanen denken dat het einde van de wereld nabij is. Anderen herinneren zich wat er allemaal is veranderd in een eeuw tijd. Het gezin Wilder bereidt zich voor op een mooie oudejaarsavond. De familie Cooley komt en Abe en Effie met de kinderen. Rose loopt mee door Mansfield met Paul en George en luistert mee naar de telegrafist en de uitleg van Paul. Op oudejaarsavond eten ze samen met alle vrienden. Daarna dansen ze en uiteindelijk gaan ze heel laat nog naar een mis in de kerk. Gelukkig laat de dominee hen op tijd gaan voor de eeuwwisseling. Er is vuurwerk en een groot vuur. Net deze nacht hoort Paul dat hij een betrekking heeft als telegrafist, zodra hij van school af is. Rose vindt het heel erg dat Paul weg gaat. Na de eeuwwisseling is Rose teleurgesteld in dat Paul weg gaat. Ze is erg gesteld geraakt op Paul en ziet in hem meer dan een oude broer. Rose denkt steeds meer na over jongens en flirten. Nate probeert haar ook wel eens thuis te brengen, maar daar moet Rose over lachen, want hij is toch net een broer. 

De schooltermijn begint weer. Rose vindt haar leraar weer eens saai en verveelt zich op school. Als ze uit moet leggen wat een gedicht betekent, zegt ze dat dat niet kan, omdat een dichter nooit precies schrijft wat hij bedoeld. De leraar is het hier niet mee eens en vraagt het aan iemand anders. Die vertaalt letterlijk de woorden. Rose is hier erg boos over en rent de klas uit. 

Dan gaat het verhaal naar Miss Sarah, zij is een lerares van ongeveer 25 jaar en nog vrijgezel. Ze wordt als een oude vrijster gezien in Mansfield. Miss Sarah woont in bij Almanzo en Laura. Dan begint een oudere mannelijke vrijgezel Miss Sarah het hof te maken. Al gauw weet het hele dorp dat hij dit doet voor een weddenschap. Miss Sarah lijkt echter verliefd en niemand durft haar te vertellen hoe het werkelijk zit. Er doen veel roddels de ronde. Uiteindelijk neemt Wade Miss Sarah mee uit rijden. Er gebeurd een ernstig ongeluk en Wade is zwaargewond. Miss Sarah is in shock en zegt dat ze net verloofd is. Ze wordt lange tijd verzorgd door Laura en andere dames. Wade lijkt toch bij te komen uit zijn coma en wordt zelfs helemaal gezond. Dan deelt Miss Sarah mede dat ze de verloving wil verbreken. Uiteindelijk wordt ze gezien met de nieuwe, jonge dokter, met wie ze uiteindelijk verloofd raakt.

Abe en Effie krijgen een nieuwe baby’tje, een jongen. Maar de baby is ziek en wil niet eten. Uiteindelijk wordt de dokter te laat geroepen en komt de baby te overlijden. Na de begrafenis huilt Laura eens goed uit en vertelt ze Rose dat, hoewel er nooit over wordt gepraat, zij haar zoontje niet is vergeten.

De eerste appeloogst komt er aan. Het is gelijk een goede oogst waar ze veel mee verdienen. Het is weer hard werken in de herfst, maar de opbrengst is goed en ze zijn weer een beetje vooruit gegaan. 

Dan wordt er ingegaan op een stukje Amerikaanse politiek. Over wie president is en wordt, over hoe de trusts alles beheersen en de gewone man zich doodwerkt voor een hongerloon. Uiteindelijk komt het bericht dat de president is doodgeschoten. Dit zorgt voor veel ophef. 

Daarna wordt Rose 15 jaar. Ze raakt in de puberteit. Ze wil mooiere jurken en spreekt mama tegen. Uiteindelijk gaat ze een patroon halen bij de Beaumonts en zo raakt ze in contact met Elsa. Elsa is een meisje waar Laura haar dochter liever niet mee ziet, maar ze kan de vriendschap tussen de meisjes niet voorkomen. Elsa heeft alles wat Rose graag zou willen. Ook is Elsa verliefd op een reizende verkoper. Dit is in deze tijd zeer ongewoon en schandelijk. Rose dient als dekmantel zodat Elsa haar verkoper, Mr. Andrews, kan ontmoeten. Hiervoor gaan ze ’s nachts de straat op en uiteindelijk leent Rose haar adres aan Elsa zodat er brieven gestuurd kunnen worden. Rose schrijft sowieso veel brieven, naar Paul, haar tante Eliza Jane, de familie in De Smet. Elsa vertelt nooit wat er in de brieven staat, ook al heeft ze dat Rose beloofd. Uiteindelijk lukt het Laura om Rose weg te houden van Elsa. Maar dan komt de briefwisseling uit! Almanzo heeft een brief weten te onderscheppen van de verkoper. In deze brief staat dat hij meer om Rose geeft dan om Elsa!! Meteen is de vriendschap definitief voorbij. Laura houdt Rose streng in de gaten, maar stiekem vindt Rose dat niet zo erg. Ze vindt het wel leuk om te leren dat mannen ook in haar geïnteresseerd zijn. 

Dan komt er een telegram uit De Smet. Pa ligt op sterven en vraagt naar Laura. Het boek draait even alleen om Laura die voor het eerst in 8 jaar de reis terug naar De Smet maakt. Gelukkig vindt ze pa nog in leven en ze waakt bij hem en verzorgt hem. Ook is ze blij haar moeder en zussen weer te zien. En ze bezoekt mensen en plaatsen in De Smet. Uiteindelijk sterft Pa in aanwezigheid van Laura.

Intussen zorgen Almanzo en Rose voor het huis en de boerderij in Mansfield. Rose zou graag haar educatie willen voortzetten op een academie, net als Blanche, maar ze krijgt de teleurstelling te verwerken dat ze wordt afgewezen. Tevens is het druk, zo in de oogsttijd. 

Als Laura weer thuis is en het leven de loop van alledag krijgt, komt er bericht dat Eliza Jane van plan is om het gezin Wilder te bezoeken. Almanzo en Laura zijn niet blij met het bezoek, maar Rose verheugd zich er op. Als snel blijkt dat Eliza Jane nog steeds niet gemakkelijk is, zoals ze ook voor een deel Laura’s huishouden overneemt. Tevens is haar zoontje Wilder een verwend jongetje dat met zachte hand wordt opgevoed en nogal stout kan zijn. Als Rose hoort dat ze toch niet naar de academie kan is ze teleurgesteld. Dan bedenkt Eliza Jane een oplossing. Zij stelt voor om Rose mee te nemen naar Crowley, waar ze deel kan nemen aan highschool. Laura heeft er moeite mee haar dochter mee te geven aan E.J., maar gunt Rose haar ontwikkeling. Uiteindelijk wordt het geregeld.

Tekeningen:

Er staan maar 2 paginagrootte tekeningen in het boek, een van twee meisjes aan het wandelen en van een gekantelde buggy. Verder kleine tekeningetjes boven elk hoofdstuk. Het zijn wel een beetje mooie tekeningen, maar vrij algemeen. De kleine tekeningetjes zijn van een huis op het land, een reistas en hoed, een cake en koffie, een grafsteen, de locomotief van een stoomtrein, een groot huis, een stapeltje brieven, een lege brief, haarkammen, een speldenkussen, een meisje met een stuk stof, de krant, de man met de hak, een ton met stempel Rocky Ridge, een vogel, een babyfles en drankje, een dokterstas, een boom, een hoed met voile, een vrouwenhoofd, een boek, een vuur van tonnen, een viool en een telegraaf-apparaatje en een pomp. 

Eigen mening:

Dit boek van de Rose-serie heb ik weer alleen in het Engels. De Rose-serie spreekt me niet zo heel erg aan, maar het is best leuk om een beetje te weten hoe het verder gaat.

Summary:

This book begins at the end of the 19th century. Mansfield is in turmoil all day long because of the approaching end of a century. Rose looks back on the past few weeks in which some Americans think the end of the world is near. Others remember how much has changed in a century. The Wilder family prepares for a beautiful New Year's Eve. The Cooley family comes and Abe and Effie with the children. Rose walks through Mansfield with Paul and George and listens to the telegrapher and Paul's explanation. On New Year's Eve they eat together with all the friends. Afterwards they dance and finally they go to a very late mass in the church. Fortunately the minister lets them go in time for the turn of the century. There are fireworks and a big fire. Just this night Paul hears that he has a job as a telegrapher, as soon as he finishes school. Rose is very sad that Paul is leaving. After the turn of the century Rose is disappointed that Paul is leaving. She has become very fond of Paul and sees him as more than an old brother. Rose is increasingly thinking about boys and flirting. Nate also tries to take her home sometimes, but Rose has to laugh about that, because he is just like a brother.

The school term starts again. Rose finds her teacher boring again and is bored at school. When she has to explain what a poem means, she says that it is not possible, because a poet never writes exactly what he means. The teacher does not agree with this and asks someone else. He literally translates the words. Rose is very angry about this and runs out of the classroom.

Then the story goes to Miss Sarah, she is a teacher of about 25 years old and still single. She is seen as an old maid in Mansfield. Miss Sarah lives with Almanzo and Laura. Then an older male bachelor starts courting Miss Sarah. Soon the whole village knows that he is doing this for a bet. However, Miss Sarah seems to be in love and no one dares to tell her what is really going on. A lot of gossip goes around. Eventually Wade takes Miss Sarah for a ride. A serious accident occurs and Wade is badly injured. Miss Sarah is in shock and says she has just become engaged. She is cared for by Laura and other ladies for a long time. Wade seems to recover from his coma and even becomes completely healthy. Then Miss Sarah announces that she wants to break off the engagement. Eventually she is seen with the new, young doctor, to whom she eventually becomes engaged.

Abe and Effie have a new baby, a boy. But the baby is sick and does not want to eat. Eventually the doctor is called too late and the baby dies. After the funeral Laura has a good cry and tells Rose that, although it is never talked about, she has not forgotten her son.

The first apple harvest is coming. It is immediately a good harvest from which they earn a lot. It is hard work again in the fall, but the yield is good and they have made some progress again.

Then a bit of American politics is discussed. About who is and will be president, about how the trusts control everything and the common man works himself to death for a pittance. Eventually the news comes that the president has been shot dead. This causes a lot of commotion.

Then Rose turns 15. She enters puberty. She wants nicer dresses and contradicts her mother. Eventually she goes to get a pattern from the Beaumonts and that is how she comes into contact with Elsa. Elsa is a girl that Laura would rather not see her daughter with, but she cannot prevent the friendship between the girls. Elsa has everything that Rose would like. Elsa is also in love with a traveling salesman. This is very unusual and shameful in this day and age. Rose serves as a cover so that Elsa can meet her salesman, Mr. Andrews. For this they go out on the street at night and eventually Rose lends her address to Elsa so that letters can be sent. Rose writes a lot of letters anyway, to Paul, her aunt Eliza Jane, the family in De Smet. Elsa never tells what is in the letters, even though she promised Rose that. Eventually Laura manages to keep Rose away from Elsa. But then the correspondence comes out! Almanzo has managed to intercept a letter from the seller. This letter states that he cares more about Rose than about Elsa!! The friendship is over for good. Laura keeps a close eye on Rose, but secretly Rose doesn't mind that. She likes learning that men are also interested in her.

Then a telegram arrives from De Smet. Pa is dying and asks for Laura. The book is all about Laura who makes the journey back to De Smet for the first time in 8 years. Fortunately, she finds Pa still alive and she watches over him and takes care of him. She is also happy to see her mother and sisters again. And she visits people and places in De Smet. Eventually Pa dies in Laura's presence.

In the meantime, Almanzo and Rose take care of the house and t e farm in Mansfield. Rose would like to continue her education at an academy, just like Blanche, but she is disappointed that she is rejected. It is also busy, during harvest time.

When Laura is back home and life takes its course, a message arrives that Eliza Jane is planning to visit the Wilder family. Almanzo and Laura are not happy about the visit, but Rose is looking forward to it. It soon becomes clear that Eliza Jane is still not easy, as she also partly takes over Laura's household. Her son Wilder is also a spoiled boy who is raised with a gentle hand and can be quite naughty. When Rose hears that she cannot go to the academy after all, she is disappointed. Then Eliza Jane comes up with a solution. She suggests taking Rose to Crowley, where she can participate in high school. Laura has difficulty giving her daughter to E.J., but grants Rose her development. Eventually it is arranged.

Drawings:

There are only 2 full-page drawings in the book, one of two girls walking and one of an overturned buggy. Furthermore, there are small drawings above each chapter. They are quite nice drawings, but quite general. The small drawings are of a house in the country, a travel bag and hat, a cake and coffee, a gravestone, the locomotive of a steam train, a large house, a pile of letters, an empty letter, hair combs, a pin cushion, a girl with a piece of cloth, the newspaper, the man with the heel, a barrel with a Rocky Ridge stamp, a bird, a baby bottle and drink, a doctor's bag, a tree, a hat with voile, a woman's head, a book, a fire of barrels, a violin and a telegraph device and a pump.

Own opinion:

I only have this book of the Rose series in English again. The Rose series does not appeal to me that much, but it is quite nice to know a little bit about how it continues.
