Het derde boek van de serie, geschreven door Laura Ingalls Wilder. 

In dit deel komt de huifkar aan bij een huis in de grond. Hoewel het een kleine woning is, weet Ma, met hulp van Laura en Mary, het huis gezellig te maken. De meisjes spelen veel bij de rivier, die voor hun huis loopt. Pa bewerkt het land en Ma regelt het huishouden. Laura en Mary maken van alles mee; ze spelen in de hooiberg, krijgen paarden met kerst, gaan zwemmen met Pa en gaan voor het eerst naar school. Op school ontmoet Laura Nellie Oleson. Nellie nodigt iedereen uit voor een feestje bij haar thuis en Laura staat verstelt van alle mooie dingen. Ma besluit dat het aardig is om ook alle vriendinnen bij hen uit te nodigen en ze spelen in de rivier en plagen de oude krab. Pa bouwt een mooi nieuw huis, maar voor hij de oogst binnen kan halen, komt er een grote wolk die bestaat uit sprinkhanen. De sprinkhanen eten alles op wat groen is. Het nieuwe huis moet worden afbetaald en Pa moet weg om geld te verdienen. Ma en de meisjes proberen zo goed als het gaat alles te doen. Ze overleven een prairiebrand en vuurbollen. Mary en Laura hoeven in deze zware tijd niet naar school. Als Pa weer thuis is, is het feest. Dan gaat Pa naar de stad, maar verdwaalt in een sneeuwstorm. Het zijn spannende dagen, waarin Ma haar best doet om geen bezorgdheid te laten blijken en dus allerlei spelletjes verzint voor de meisje. Gelukkig komt Pa weer veilig thuis. 

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn de bekende tekeningen van Garth Williams met warme, mooie, veelzeggende plaatjes. Er zitten meer tekeningen in dit boek dan in de Nederlandse versie. Tekeningen in het boek zijn van plantjes en dieren, een meisje in de rivier, meisjes die door het gras lopen. De huifkar die stopt boven op het huis onder de grond. Ma en de meisjes die naar de deur van het huis lopen. Laura tegenover de das, Laura die de koe melkt, de os op het dak, de meisjes die op de hooiberg spelen, de ossen op hol voor de wagen, de meisjes bij de kerstpaarden, Laura hangend aan de loopplank in het water, een fornuis, Pa en Laura met de viskrat, weer de meisjes die door het gras lopen, Nellie tegenover Laura, meisjeskoor in de kerk, Pa en Ma aan het werk op het veld in de sprinkhanenregen, Ma en de meisjes die staan te kijken naar een regenwolk, Laura vindt Charlotte in een plas, de kerstboom in de kerk, prairievuur bij de hooibergen, de meisjes brengen hout in huis, Ma gaat in het donker via het touw naar de stal en Pa in het hol in de sneeuw.

Eigen mening:

Het bekende verhaal, maar dan in het Engels. Leuk boek. Meer plaatjes van Garth Williams is altijd leuk.

Summary:

The third book in the series, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

In this part, the covered wagon arrives at a house in the ground. Although it is a small house, Ma, with the help of Laura and Mary, manages to make the house cozy. The girls play a lot by the river, which runs in front of their house. Pa works the land and Ma takes care of the housework. Laura and Mary experience all kinds of things; they play in the haystack, get horses for Christmas, go swimming with Pa and go to school for the first time. At school, Laura meets Nellie Oleson. Nellie invites everyone to a party at her house and Laura is amazed by all the beautiful things. Ma decides that it would be nice to invite all the friends to their house as well and they play in the river and tease the old crab. Pa builds a beautiful new house, but before he can harvest the crop, a large cloud of grasshoppers appears. The grasshoppers eat everything that is green. The new house has to be paid off and Pa has to leave to earn money. Ma and the girls try to do everything as best they can. They survive a prairie fire and fireballs. Mary and Laura don't have to go to school during this difficult time. When Pa comes home again, there is a party. Then Pa goes to the city, but gets lost in a snowstorm. These are exciting days, in which Ma does her best not to show concern and therefore comes up with all kinds of games for the girl. Fortunately, Pa comes home safely.

Drawings:

The drawings are the well-known drawings by Garth Williams with warm, beautiful, meaningful pictures. There are more drawings in this book than in the Dutch version. Drawings in the book are of plants and animals, a girl in the river, girls walking through the grass. The covered wagon that stops on top of the house underground. Ma and the girls walking to the door of the house. Laura versus the badger, Laura milking the cow, the ox on the roof, the girls playing on the haystack, the oxen running wild in front of the wagon, the girls with the Christmas horses, Laura hanging from the plank in the water, a stove, Pa and Laura with the fish crate, the girls walking through the grass again, Nellie versus Laura, girls' choir in church, Pa and Ma working in the field in the grasshopper rain, Ma and the girls standing looking at a rain cloud, Laura finds Charlotte in a puddle, the Christmas tree in church, prairie fire at the haystacks, the girls bringing wood into the house, Ma goes to the stable in the dark via the rope and Pa in the den in the snow.

Own opinion:

The well-known story, but in English. Nice book. More pictures by Garth Williams is always nice.
