Samenvatting:

In dit boekje wordt een soort onderzoek gedaan naar het werk van Laura Ingalls Wilder en hoe het is geschreven. Er worden drie genres uitgewerkt: non-fictie, is eigenlijk meer (auto)biografie, feitelijk. In Laura’s kleine huis serie staan veel feiten en het is autobiografisch. Dus je zou het zo kunnen noemen. Dan komt Memoir, dit is eigenlijk ook non-fictie/ autobiografie. Laura’s verhalen zijn zeker ook memoir, iedereen weet dat ze eigenlijk haar verleden wil vastleggen. Maar vervolgens zijn haar boeken ook zeker fictie. In non-fictie of memoir kan geen dialoog voorkomen, maar dat is wel in de boeken. Daarnaast is met onderzoek vast komen te liggen dat Laura verhalen heeft verzonnen om de boeken interessant te maken, zoals dat Jack tot in Walnut Grove bij hen is gebleven (Jack is al voor het kleine huis op de prairie bij de paarden gebleven voor wie pa de mustangs ruilde), maar ook het verhaal van Mr. Edwards die pa helpt om het land in De Smet vast te leggen is echt verzonnen. 

Het is eigenlijk heel bijzonder dat de drie genres samen komen in een serie. Maar weinig schrijvers krijgen dat voor elkaar .Daarnaast heeft Laura altijd gezegd dat haar boeken “de waarheid” waren. Maar er wordt ook wel gesteld: wie had kunnen denken dat haar boeken zo lang zo’n impact zouden hebben en zo zouden worden uitgeplozen, Laura zelf zeker niet. Dus wat zij heeft gezegd, is ook waar: het is autobiografisch en memoir, het is feitelijk en dus nonfictie, maar het is ook zeker fictie.

Eigen mening:

Het is een dun boekje waar deze drie varianten worden uitgelegd en worden gekoppeld aan de boeken. Het is een soort proefschrift/ essay-achtig boekje. Maar als je het even goed leest, bevat het wel interessante informatie.

Opvallend vind ik dat er helemaal niets gezegd wordt over de bijdrage van Rose aan de verhalen. Ik denk zelf namelijk dat Laura het nonfictie en memoir heeft geschreven, maar dat Rose de fictie heeft toegevoegd.

Summary:

This book is a kind of research into the work of Laura Ingalls Wilder and how it is written. Three genres are elaborated: non-fiction, is actually more (auto)biography, factual. In Laura's Little House series there are many facts and it is autobiographical. So you could call it that. Then comes Memoir, this is actually also non-fiction/autobiography. Laura's stories are certainly also memoirs, everyone knows that she actually wants to record her past. But then her books are also certainly fiction. In non-fiction or memoir there can be no dialogue, but there is in the books. In addition, research has established that Laura made up stories to make the books interesting, such as that Jack stayed with them until Walnut Grove (Jack had already stayed with the horses for whom Pa traded the mustangs before the little house on the prairie), but also the story of Mr. Edwards who helps Pa to record the land in De Smet is really made up. It is actually quite special that the three genres come together in a series. Few writers manage to do that. In addition, Laura has always said that her books were “the truth”. But it is also said: who could have thought that her books would have such an impact for so long and would be so scrutinized, certainly not Laura herself. So what she said is also true: it is autobiographical and memoir, it is factual and therefore nonfiction, but it is also certainly fiction.

Own opinion:

It is a thin book in which these three variants are explained and linked to the books. It is a kind of dissertation/essay-like book. But if you read it carefully, it does contain interesting information.

I find it striking that nothing is said about Rose's contribution to the stories. I think that Laura wrote the nonfiction and memoir, but that Rose added the fiction.
