Dit boek gaat over het jaar tussen Walnut Grove en het kleine huis aan het Zilvermeer. De familie Ingalls verhuisd vanuit walnut Grove naar Burr Oak omdat Pa daar mede-eigenaar is geworden van een hotel. Allereerst begint het boek in Walnut Grove waar het gezin in een gehuurde woning in de stad woont en de meisjes naar school gaan. Als ze thuiskomen ligt Ma in bed en de meisjes zijn bezorgd dat Ma ziek is. Dan blijkt dat er een klein broertje is geboren. Hierna verhuist de familie terug naar de boerderij. Laura is blij om weer in het bekende huis te zijn. Maar op de boerderij is het moeilijk. De sprinkhanen hebben veel verwoest en er valt geen regen. De bui die overtrekt is een vreselijk onweersbui die weinig goeds brengt. De regen houdt dagen aan en in deze periode wordt Ma heel ernstig ziek. Pa probeert wat hij kan om de koorts te keren, maar hij waakt een lange tijd aan Ma's bed. Dan zegt hij plotseling tegen Laura dat ze naar meneer Nelson moet en dat hij de dokter moet halen. Laura weet dat door de regen de rivier erg is gezwollen en Pa heeft haar gewaarschuwd om er niet naar toe te gaan. Maar nu moet ze wel, Pa heeft het gezegd en Ma is erg ziek en moet geholpen worden. De loopplank is niet meer te zien, maar Laura wil aan de haar opgedragen taak voldoen. Gelukkig staat meneer Nelson aan de andere kant en schreeuwt tegen Laura dat ze terug moet gaan. Laura roept dat hij de dokter moet halen. Terug in huis realiseert Pa zich wat hij Laura heeft gevraagd. Gelukkig komt de dokter. Hij maakt Ma weer beter, Het duurt lang voor ze weer opknapt en ze heeft nog lang een gele kleur. De meisjes dragen het hele huishouden en de zorg voor Freddie. Na de regen kleurt de prairie en ziet alles er fleurig uit, tot de eitjes van de sprinkhanen uitkomen. Pa is de prairie zat en bedenkt een plan. Hij wordt mede-eigenaar van een hotel in Burr Oak, Iowa. maar eerst reist het gezin Ingalls met de huifkar naar het andere gezin Ingalls, van Oom Peter en tante Eliza. Het is leuk om samen te zijn met alle neefjes en nichtjes en samen alle karweitjes te doen. Maar dan wordt Freddie ziek. De dokter kan hem niet beter maken en de kleine baby wordt zwakker en zwakker. Uiteindelijk gaat Freddie dood en begraaft de familie Ingalls hem in de buurt van het huis van Oom Peter en Tante Eliza. Vlak hierna moeten Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura en Carrie verder naar Burr Oak. Het is herfst, het regent en hun gedachten zijn bij Freddie, die ze moeten achterlaten. Het is stil in de wagen. Ze komen aan bij het hotel. Daar is de familie Steadman met hun drie jongens. Al snel merken Mary, Laura en Carrie dat de jongens pestkoppen zijn. In het hotel is het druk. Pa en Ma zijn de hele dag bezig. Ma in de keuken en Pa met karweitjes. Ook de meisjes moeten helpen. Maar Mary, Laura en Carrie mogen ook naar school in Burr Oak, een echte school, van steen, met twee lokalen. Meester Reid woont ook in het hotel en de meisjes vinden hem aardig. Hij kan heel goed voorlezen. Vlak voor kerst worden de meisjes Ingalls alle drie ziek. Ze hebben de mazelen. Hoewel ze het liefste rust willen, worden veel kinderen naar hen toe gestuurd om besmet te raken. Ook de vervelende jongens Steadman. Naast het hotel is de saloon en daar gaat op een avond iemand dood door teveel alcohol. Ma is het helemaal zat om in het hotel te wonen en het gezin verhuist naar kamers boven de kruidenier. Ma vindt hier rust en Pa doet allerlei klusjes. De meisjes gaan naar school en in de avond reciteren zij hun verhalen. Tegenover de kruidenier is een mooi, groot huis. Ma en de meisjes worden uitgenodigd op de thee en ze mogen het hele huis bekijken. Er is zelfs een bibliotheek en een speelkamer! Laura zou er wel uren kunnen blijven. Dan maakt Ma de meisjes midden in de nacht wakker. Vanuit het raam van hun bovenhuis zien ze dat de saloon in brand staat. Pa staat in de lange lijn met mannen die emmers doorgeven om het vuur te blussen. Een man blijft maar pompen en roepen. Als hij opzij wordt geduwd omdat zijn emmer niet volloopt, blijkt hij in een emmer zonder bodem te pompen. Het vuur wordt geblust zonder dat er andere gebouwen beschadigt raken. Niet lang hierna huurt pa een echt huis van meneer Bisbee, aan de rand van Burr Oak. Het is een groot huis en ze hebben een koe. Laura houdt er van om met de koe naar de weide te gaan. Als Laura wordt weggestuurd voor een lange boodschap, vindt ze bij thuiskomst baby Grace in Ma's armen. Er is weer een baby om voor te zorgen. Laura's dagen zijn gevuld, maar als ze op een dag thuiskomt met de koe heeft Ma bezoek. Het is de vrouw van de dokter. Laura hoort haar voorstel: namelijk dat ze Laura wil adopteren. De familie Ingalls heeft het zwaar en is arm, om de kosten van het gezin te verlichten wil Mevrouw Star laura in huis nemen en aannemen als haar eigen kind. Laura is met stomheid geslagen, maar gelukkig geeft Ma aan dat zij en Pa Laura voor geen goud willen missen, hoe zwaar ze het ook hebben. Laura geeft Ma daarna een dikke knuffel. In de spaarzame vrije tijd die Laura die zomer heeft, brengt ze veel tijd door met haar vriendin Alice. De meisjes lopen vaak door Burr Oak en brengen ook veel tijd door op de rustige, oude begraafplaats waar ze de grafstenen lezen en rustig praten. Dan op een nacht wekt Ma Laura. Buiten blijkt dat de huifkar is geladen en dat ze midden in de nacht vertrekken uit Burr Oak. Voor de zon opkomt zijn ze de grens met Minnesota over. Zo ontloopt pa problemen vanwege achterstallige huur. En opnieuw zit het gezin in de wagen, terug richting Walnut Grove. 

Tekeningen:

In het boek staan veel tekeningen. Meestal aan het begin van een hoofdstuk en vaak ook paginagroot. Het zijn hele warme, levendige tekeningen, heel mooi en levensecht. Een mooie tekening van baby Freddie of van Laura die om de deur kijkt bij de bibliotheek. Kinderen in de klas en verder wat algemenere plaatjes. De eerste tekening is van drie meisjes, warm ingepakt die over het platteland lopen. Een hond voor een deur. Een babyhoofdje, een huifkar, een man en kind die kijken naar de wolken, een meisje dat evenwicht houdt op een loopplank, meisjes in een keuken, een meisje dat de was doet, een meisje met een baby op de arm op de prairie, meisjes met een cakeblik, een grote familie samen op de veranda van een huis, een huifkar in de regen (2x), het hotel in Burr Oak, een schoen met een pop, een leraar in een school, een meisje in bed, het porseleinen herderinnetje, een meisje dat om de hoek van een deur kijkt in een bibliotheek, drie poppen, meisjes die door een raam kijken naar een brandend gebouw, een man die staat te pompen in een emmer met gat, een groot, vrijstaand huis, een moeder en baby, twee ruziënde kinderen, Twee dames op bezoek en een meisje dat door de deur spiekt, moederpoes en kittens en een huifkar met twee meisjes achterin.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi boek, gekregen van papa en mama. Het missende jaar in Burr Oak. Gebaseerd op de brieven die Laura er ooit over heeft geschreven en deels fictie. Goed leesbaar.

Summary:

This book is about the year between Walnut Grove and the little house on Silver Lake. The Ingalls family moves from Walnut Grove to Burr Oak because Pa has become partial owner of a hotel there. First, the book starts in Walnut Grove where the family lives in a rented house in the city and the girls go to school. When they come home, Ma is in bed and the girls are worried that Ma is sick. Then it turns out that a little brother has been born. After this, the family moves back to the farm. Laura is happy to be back in the familiar house. But on the farm it is difficult. The locusts have destroyed a lot and there is no rain. The shower that passes is a terrible thunderstorm that brings little good. The rain continues for days and during this period Ma becomes very seriously ill. Pa does what he can to avert the fever, but he watches over Ma for a long time. Then he suddenly tells Laura that she must go to Mr. Nelson and that he must fetch the doctor. Laura knows that the river has swollen badly because of the rain and Pa has warned her not to go there. But now she has to, Pa has said so and Ma is very sick and needs help. The plank is no longer visible, but Laura wants to do the task assigned to her. Fortunately, Mr. Nelson is on the other side and shouts at Laura to go back. Laura shouts that he must get the doctor. Back in the house, Pa realizes what he has asked Laura. Fortunately, the doctor comes. He makes Ma better again. It takes a long time for her to recover and she remains yellow for a long time. The girls take care of the entire household and Freddie. After the rain, the prairie turns colorful and everything looks bright, until the grasshopper eggs hatch. Pa is tired of the prairie and comes up with a plan. He becomes partly owner of a hotel in Burr Oak, Iowa. But first the Ingalls family travels by covered wagon to the other Ingalls family, Uncle Peter and Aunt Eliza. It is nice to be together with all the cousins and do all the chores together. But then Freddie gets sick. The doctor can't make him better and the little baby gets weaker and weaker. Finally Freddie dies and the Ingalls family buries him near the house of Uncle Peter and Aunt Eliza. Shortly after that Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura and Carrie have to go on to Burr Oak. It is autumn, it is raining and their thoughts are with Freddie, whom they have to leave behind. It is quiet in the wagon. They arrive at the hotel. There are the Steadmans with their three boys. Mary, Laura and Carrie soon notice that the boys are bullies. It is busy in the hotel. Pa and Ma are busy all day. Ma in the kitchen and Pa with chores. The girls have to help too. But Mary, Laura and Carrie are also allowed to go to school in Burr Oak, a real school, made of stone, with two classrooms. Mr. Reid also lives in the hotel and the girls like him. He is a very good reader. Just before Christmas, the Ingalls girls all fall ill. They have the measles. Although they would prefer to be alone, many children are sent to them to get infected. Including the annoying Steadman boys. Next to the hotel is the saloon and one night someone dies there from too much alcohol. Ma is fed up with living in the hotel and the family moves to rooms above the grocery store. Ma finds peace here and Pa does all kinds of chores. The girls go to school and in the evening they recite their stories. Opposite the grocery store is a beautiful, large house. Ma and the girls are invited for tea and they are allowed to look around the entire house. There is even a library and a playroom! Laura could stay there for hours. Then Ma wakes the girls in the middle of the night. From the window of their upstairs apartment they see that the saloon is on fire. Pa is standing in the long line of men passing buckets to put out the fire. One man keeps pumping and shouting. When he is pushed aside because his bucket does not fill, he is found to be pumping into a bucket with no bottom. The fire is put out without damaging any other buildings. Not long after this, Pa rents a real house from Mr. Bisbee, on the edge of Burr Oak. It is a big house and they have a cow. Laura loves to take the cow to the pasture. When Laura is sent away on a long errand, she comes home to find baby Grace in Ma's arms. There is another baby to take care of. Laura's days are full, but when she comes home one day with the cow, Ma has a visitor. It is the doctor's wife. Laura overhears her proposal: that she wants to adopt Laura. The Ingalls family is struggling and poor, and to ease the family's expenses, Mrs. Star wants to take Laura into her home and adopt her as her own child. Laura is stunned, but fortunately Ma tells her that she and Pa would not miss Laura for anything, no matter how hard things are. Laura then gives Ma a big hug. Laura spends much of her spare time that summer with her friend Alice. The girls often walk through Burr Oak and also spend a lot of time in the quiet old cemetery where they read the gravestones and talk quietly. Then one night Ma wakes Laura. Outside it turns out that the covered wagon is loaded and that they are leaving Burr Oak in the middle of the night. Before the sun comes up they are across the border into Minnesota. That way Pa avoids problems with the rent. And once again the family is in the wagon, heading back to Walnut Grove.

Drawings:

The book contains many drawings. Usually at the beginning of a chapter and often full-page. They are very warm, lively drawings, very beautiful and lifelike. A beautiful drawing of baby Freddie or of Laura looking around the door at the library. Children in the classroom and some more general pictures. The first drawing is of three girls, warmly wrapped up, walking through the countryside. A dog in front of a door. A baby's head, a covered wagon, a man and a child looking at the clouds, a girl balancing on a plank, girls in a kitchen, a girl doing the laundry, a girl with a baby in her arms on the prairie, girls with a cake tin, a large family together on the porch of a house, a covered wagon in the rain (2x), the hotel in Burr Oak, a shoe with a doll, a teacher in a school, a girl in bed, the porcelain shepherdess, a girl looking around the corner of a door in a library, three dolls, girls looking through a window at a burning building, a man pumping in a bucket with a hole, a large, detached house, a mother and baby, two arguing children, Two ladies visiting and a girl peeking through the door, mother cat and kittens and a covered wagon with two girls in the back.

Own opinion:

A beautiful book, received from daddy and mommy. The missing year in Burr Oak. Based on the letters Laura once wrote about it and partly fiction. Very readable.
