Het boek begint met dat de wagen aankomt op de prairie in de buurt van het stadje Walnut Grove. Op het land van iemand die wil verkopen. Pa onderhandelt, terwijl Laura het pad volgt naar de kreek. Maar er zijn twee grote honden, dus gaat ze gauw terug naar de veilige wagen met Jack. Pa ruilt de paarden tegen ossen en de huif tegen het huis enzovoorts. Het gezin Ingalls slaapt nog 1 nachtje in de wagen en de volgende morgen maken ze het huis in de grond schoon. Een kleine kamer met een dak van stro en plaggen, vlakbij het beekje. Er is op de prairie een stal met twee ossen. Laura en Mary helpen Ma de dugout mooi te maken en iedere ochtend doen ze hun karweitjes. Dan gaan ze buiten spelen, in het beekje, met de bloemen. Een keer neemt Pa het hele gezin mee naar een diepe poel verderop in het beekje om te zwemmen. Als de meisjes te diep de poel in gaan, trekt hij ze onder water. Natuurlijk gaat Laura vaak onder water, maar Mary slechts 1 keer. Het is zo warm buiten dat Laura in de week daarna eigenlijk ook naar de poel wil, hoewelPpa heeft gezegd dat dat niet mag. Mary zit binnen in het koele huis, Laura is alleen en gaat op weg naar de poel. Ze komt een eng beest tegen die haar weerhoudt om naar de poel te gaan. Na dit avontuur krijgt de familie Ingalls een koe. En Laura weet hoe ze deze moet melken. Daarna gaan Pa en Ma naar de stad. Laura en Mary blijven alleen op de prairie. Als Pa en Ma terug komen, blijken de ossen op hol te zijn. Het is nog een spannend moment of de wagen kantelt, maar gelukkig gebeurd dat niet. Pa heeft een groot grond stuk geploegd. Daarna maakt hij verschillende hooibergen. Laura en Mary gaan van de hooibergen rollen, wat ze erg leuk vinden. Maar de hooiberg rolt helemaal uit elkaar en pa is not amused. In de middag gaat Laura eerst ruiken aan de hooiberg, al heeft ze Pa beloofd niet meer van de hooiberg te rollen. Dan klimt ze er op en uiteindelijk gaat ze springen, wat ook erg leuk is. Maar ook dit haalt de hele hooiberg uit elkaar. Pa is boos als hij thuiskomt, op de meisjes, dat ze weer in/ op de hooiberg hebben gespeeld. Als hij Laura boos aankijkt omdat ze weer van de hooiberg is gegleden, antwoordt ze onschuldig dat ze dat niet heeft gedaan. Als Pa zijn onvrede laat blijken, geeft Laura aan dat ze zijn gesprongen en dat Pa niet gezegd had dat dat niet mocht. Daarna verbied Pa de meisjes bij de hooibergen te komen.  Het is alweer bijna kerstmis. Er valt geen sneeuw, wel regen. De meisjes denken niet dat de kerstman komt. Ma vraagt hen paarden te vragen voor kerstmis. Ze weten dat Pa ze koopt en eigenlijk is Laura er niet blij mee. Maar met kerst mag ze op de paarden rijden en dat is wel heel leuk. Voor Carrie mogen Laura en Mary een knopenketting maken. Daarna wordt het al gauw weer lente. De sneeuw dooit weg en de beek wordt een wilde rivier. Laura gaat toch spelen in de rivier en verdrinkt bijna. Pa zaait een groot tarweveld in en gelooft echt dat hij een goede oogst gaat krijgen. Hij bouwt vast een echt huis van planken, met een zolder en glazen ramen en gekochte deuren met porseleinen knoppen. En voor ma een nieuw fornuis. Het huis is ontzettend mooi en groot voor de hele familie. Laura en Mary kunnen van dit huis in een ander stuk van de beek spelen en vinden de oude krab en bloedzuigers. Maar Ma wil dat de meisjes naar school gaan nu ze dichter bij de stad wonen. Laura zet eerst nog een visval samen met pa en wil eigenlijk helemaal niet naar school. De eerste keer school is niet leuk, maar al snel geniet Laura van de andere meisjes en de lessen. Alleen Nellie Oleson is niet leuk. Ze maakt ook ruzie met Laura. Maar een dag later nodigt Nellie alle meisjes uit voor een feestje bij haar thuis. Ze mogen met al het mooie speelgoed spelen van Nellie en Willie en krijgen limonade en cake. Daarna zegt Ma dat Mary en Laura ook hun vriendinnen uit mogen nodigen. Ze spelen buiten en Laura jaagt Nellie naar de buurt van de krab en naar de bloedzuigers. Ze eten sneeuwballen en drinken melk. Daarna blijkt er een kerk te zijn gebouwd in de stad en gaat de familie iedere zondag naar de kerk, waar Laura het fijn vind als dominee Alden preekt. De tarwe groeit goed, het is bijna oogsttijd, maar dan komt de wolk sprinkhanen die al het groen, de tarwe, de groente in de tuin alles opeet. Niets blijft er over om van te leven. De koe geeft minder melk, Pa krijgt niet het geld dat hij verwacht. Pa moet op zoek naar werk. Hij loopt 300km voor hij bij een gebied is met een goede oogst. Intussen wachten Ma en de meisjes op nieuws van Pa. Het is een vervelende tijd. Ma krijgt bezoek van mw Nelson met haar dochtertje Anna. Mary en Laura laten Anna spelen met Charlotte, maar daarna denkt Anna dat ze Charlotte mag houden. Laura is erg verdrietig. Elke week gaat Laura naar de familie Nelson om te vragen of er een brief van Pa is. Op een van deze dagen vindt ze Charlotte in de modder. Ze neemt Charlotte mee en Ma en Laura maken Charlotte weer mooi. Daarna blijkt er een brief van Pa te zijn met geld. Uiteindelijk komt Pa naar huis en is iedereen weer blij. Als Pa thuis is gaan ze naar de stad voor nieuwe schoenen en nieuwe stoffen en eten. Op kerstavond luidt de klok van de kerk en is er een kerstboom. Laura heeft nog nooit zoiets moois gezien. Ze krijgt kadootjes en snoep uit de kerstboom en een hele mooie cape. Als de lente uitbreekt, komen de sprinkhanen uit hun ei. Ze eten al het nieuwe groen op en Pa plant niet eens tarwe, omdat dat nu geen zin heeft. Op een dag gaan de sprinkhanen lopen naar het westen. Ze lopen over de koe door het huis, over het dak, ze lopen. Na een paar dagen vliegen ze weg. Het is te laat in het seizoen om te planten, dus Pa moet weer van huis om te werken. Deze keer lijkt het minder erg. Ma en de meisjes bestrijden samen met mr Nelson een prairiebrand en de meisjes leren thuis. Pa komt gelukkig weer thuis. Pa en Ma gaan naar de stad, maar als er een sneeuwstorm opsteekt, halen Laura en Mary de hele houtstapel naar binnen. Deze keer is het een strenge winter met veel sneeuw en sneeuwstormen. Pa gaat naar de stad op een mooie dag, maar voor hij terug is, steekt er een sneeuwstorm op. Ma en de meisjes zijn bang dat Pa door de storm is overvallen en maken zich grote zorgen. Na 4 dagen luwt de storm en komt een dik ingepakt iets naar het huis lopen. Het blijkt Pa te zijn, die vlakbij in een gat in de grond de storm uit heeft gezeten. Hij heeft het kerstsnoep en de koekjes voor het kerstdiner opgegeten. Maar niemand vind dat erg, want ze zijn maar wat blij dat Pa weer terug is.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn bekende tekeningen van Garth Williams met kleur. Het zijn mooie tekeningen en met kleur zijn ze nog levendiger. De tekeningen zijn de moeite waard. De eerste tekening is van een meisje in de rivier. De volgende tekeningen zijn: de huifkar die stopt boven op het huis onder de grond. Ma en de meisjes die naar de deur van het huis lopen. Pa die de meisjes leert zwemmen, Laura tegenover de das, Laura die de koe melkt, de os op het dak, de meisjes die op de hooiberg spelen, de ossen op hol voor de wagen, de meisjes bij de kerstpaarden, Laura hangend aan de loopplank in het water, een fornuis, Pa en Laura met de viskrat, weer de meisjes die door het gras lopen naar een schoolgebouw met kinderen ervoor, Nellie die Laura aan de haren trekt,  Nellie tegenover Laura, meisjeskoor in de kerk, Pa en Ma aan het werk op het veld in de sprinkhanenregen, Ma en de meisjes die staan te kijken naar een regenwolk, Laura vindt Charlotte in een plas, de kerstboom in de kerk, prairievuur bij de hooibergen, de meisjes brengen hout in huis, Ma gaat in het donker via het touw naar de stal en Pa in het hol in de sneeuw.

Eigen mening:

Ik heb dit boek gekocht in 2021 om de serie met gekleurde tekeningen van Garth Williams compleet te krijgen. Daar is het de moeite waard voor. En het verhaal was weer leuk om te lezen.

Summary:

The book begins with the wagon arriving on the prairie near the town of Walnut Grove. On the land of someone who wants to sell. Pa negotiates, while Laura follows the path to the creek. But there are two big dogs, so she quickly goes back to the safety of the wagon with Jack. Pa trades the horses for oxen and the wagon cover for the house and so on. The Ingalls family sleeps in the wagon one more night and the next morning they clean the house in the ground. A small room with a roof of straw and sod, near the creek. There is a stable on the prairie with two oxen. Laura and Mary help Ma make the dugout nice and every morning they do their chores. Then they go outside to play, in the creek, with the flowers. One time Pa takes the whole family to a deep pool further down the creek to swim. When the girls go too deep in the pool, he pulls them under water. Of course Laura goes under water often, but Mary only once. It is so warm outside that Laura actually wants to go to the pond the following week, even though Pa has said that she is not allowed. Mary is inside the cool house, Laura is alone and sets off for the pond. She encounters a scary animal that stops her from going to the pond. After this adventure, the Ingalls family gets a cow. And Laura knows how to milk it. Then Pa and Ma go to the city. Laura and Mary stay alone on the prairie. When Pa and Ma come back, the oxen appear to have bolted. It is still a tense moment whether the wagon will tip over, but fortunately that does not happen. Pa has ploughed a large piece of land. Then he makes several haystacks. Laura and Mary start rolling down the haystacks, which they find very enjoyable. But the haystack falls apart completely and Pa is not amused. In the afternoon, Laura first goes to smell the haystack, even though she has promised Pa that she would not roll down the haystack again. Then she climbs on it and eventually she starts jumping, which is also very enjoyable. But this also takes the whole haystack apart. Pa is angry when he comes home, with the girls, because they played in/on the haystack again. When he looks angrily at Laura because she slipped off the haystack again, she innocently answers that she didn't do that. When Pa shows his displeasure, Laura indicates that they jumped and that Pa didn't say that it wasn't allowed. Then Pa forbids the girls to go near the haystacks. It's almost Christmas again. There's no snow, but there is rain. The girls don't think Santa Claus is coming. Ma asks them to ask for horses for Christmas. They know that Pa buys them and Laura isn't really happy about it. But at Christmas she gets to ride the horses and that's really nice. Laura and Mary get to make a button necklace for Carrie. Then it soon becomes spring again. The snow melts and the stream becomes a wild river. Laura goes to play in the river anyway and almost drowns. Pa sows a large wheat field and really believes that he's going to get a good harvest. He's going to build a real house out of planks, with a loft and glass windows and bought doors with china knobs. And for Ma a new stove. The house is very nice and big for the whole family. Laura and Mary can play in another part of the creek from this house and find the old crab and leeches. But Ma wants the girls to go to school now that they live closer to the city. Laura sets a fish trap with Pa and doesn't really want to go to school at all. The first time at school is not fun, but soon Laura enjoys the other girls and the lessons. Only Nellie Oleson is not fun. She also quarrels with Laura. But a day later Nellie invites all the girls to a party at her house. They are allowed to play with all the nice toys of Nellie and Willie and get lemonade and cake. Then Ma says that Mary and Laura can invite their friends too. They play outside and Laura chases Nellie to the crab and to the leeches. They eat snowballs and drink milk. Then it turns out that a church has been built in the city and the family goes to church every Sunday, where Laura likes it when reverend Alden preaches. The wheat grows well, it is almost harvest time, but then the cloud of locusts comes and eats all the green, the wheat, the vegetables in the garden. There is nothing left to live on. The cow gives less milk, Pa does not get the money he expects. Pa has to look for work. He walks 300 km before he reaches an area with a good harvest. In the meantime, Ma and the girls wait for news from Pa. It is an unpleasant time. Ma gets a visit from Mrs. Nelson with her daughter Anna. Mary and Laura let Anna play with Charlotte, but then Anna thinks she can keep Charlotte. Laura is very sad. Every week Laura goes to the Nelson family to ask if there is a letter from Pa. One of these days she finds Charlotte in the mud. She takes Charlotte with her and Ma and Laura make Charlotte beautiful again. Then it turns out that there is a letter from Pa and money. Eventually, Pa comes home and everyone is happy again. When Pa gets home, they go to town for new shoes and new fabrics and food. On Christmas Eve, the church bell rings and there is a Christmas tree. Laura has never seen anything so beautiful. She gets presents and candy from the tree and a beautiful cape. When spring breaks, the grasshoppers hatch from their eggs. They eat all the new greenery and Pa doesn't even plant wheat because there's no point in planting it now. One day, the grasshoppers go west. They walk over the cow, through the house, over the roof, they walk. After a few days, they fly away. It's too late in the season to plant, so Pa has to go away to work again. This time, it doesn't seem so bad. Ma and the girls fight a prairie fire with Mr. Nelson and the girls learn at home. Pa comes home again, thankfully. Pa and Ma go to town, but when a snowstorm comes, Laura and Mary pull the whole woodpile inside. This time it is a hard winter with lots of snow and blizzards. Pa goes to town on a nice day, but before he gets back, a blizzard starts. Ma and the girls are afraid that Pa has been caught in the storm and are very worried. After 4 days the storm subsides and a thickly wrapped thing comes walking towards the house. It turns out to be Pa, who has been sitting out the storm in a hole in the ground nearby. He has eaten the Christmas candy and cookies for Christmas dinner. But nobody minds because they are very happy that Pa is back.

Drawings:

The drawings are well-known drawings by Garth Williams with color. They are beautiful drawings and with color they are even more vivid. The drawings are worth it. The first drawing is of a girl in the river. The next drawings are: the covered wagon that stops on top of the house underground. Ma and the girls walking to the door of the house. Pa teaching the girls to swim, Laura versus the badger, Laura milking the cow, the ox on the roof, the girls playing on the haystack, the oxen running wild in front of the cart, the girls at the Christmas horses, Laura hanging from the gangplank in the water, a stove, Pa and Laura with the fish crate, the girls walking through the grass to a school building with children in front of it, Nellie pulling Laura by the hair, Nellie versus Laura, girls' choir in church, Pa and Ma working in the field in the grasshopper rain, Ma and the girls looking at a rain cloud, Laura finding Charlotte in a puddle, the Christmas tree in church, prairie fire at the haystacks, the girls bringing wood into the house, Ma going to the stable in the dark via the rope and Pa in the den in the snow.

My own opinion:

I bought this book in 2021 to complete the series with colored drawings by Garth Williams. It is worth it for that. And the story was fun to read again.
