Het begint met dat het hele gezin Tucker hun buren gaat helpen bij het bladvrij maken

van de mais. Dit heet een cornhusking en is een hele oude traditie. Iedereen gaat mee, de meisjes maken poppen van de maisbladeren, de jongens spelen en de volwassenen werken en lachen. Wie een mais met rood vindt, moet zich laten kussen door zijn/haar geliefde. Dit overkomt Juf Heath, maar ze vindt het kussen niet zo heel erg. Wie juist een verschrompelde maiskolf vindt, die moet zijn geliefde juist een klap geven. Dit overkomt iemand anders in de kring. Er wordt veel gelachen en er is ook een jongeman die viool speelt. Als het werk gedaan is, eet iedereen samen. Moeder is vaak vrolijk en houdt van zingen en dansen. Ook plaagt ze de kinderen vaak. Als Lydia commentaar heeft op Tom, die probeert om Lewis bij te houden met rennen, maar dat niet kan winnen omdat hij jonger is, vraagt Lydia zich af waarom een klein kind van 8 jaar zich druk maakt om te proberen te winnen van iemand van 13 jaar. Moeder plaagt haar dat ze zelf ook al zo oud is (Lydia is 9 jaar). Dan zegt vader: “maar als Lydia al zo oud is, dan ben jij helemaal zo oud als de heuvels, Martha”. Iedereen moet daar om lachen.

Omdat het midden in de winter is, gaan de oudere kinderen Lewis, Lydia en Tom naar school. Martha mag nog thuisblijven om moeder te helpen en voor de gezelligheid. De school is vol genoeg met de oudere leerlingen. Charlotte vindt het fijn om moeder voor zich alleen te hebben, hoewel baby Mary er ook bij is. Op een dag besluit moeder om naar de markt te gaan. Ze stoppen even bij de smidse, waar iemand beweert dat de oorlog maar eens afgelopen moet zijn en dat de regering niet zoveel toe moet geven. Als hij Moeder ziet verontschuldigd hij zich. Moeder geeft aan de taal niet zo erg te vinden, maar het idee dat de regering het niet goed doet wel. Als de man zegt dat moeder zeker de moeilijke soort vrouw is, geeft vader als antwoord dat de man beter moet nadenken wat hij allemaal zegt in zijn winkel. Daarna wordt er nog een tijdje gelachen over dat moeder een sterke vrouw is met een eigen mening, die zelfs de president nog de waarheid zou vertellen als dat zo uitkomt. Dan gaan moeder, Charlotte en Mary winkelen. Ze kopen een nieuwe hoed voor vader. Vader vindt dat eigenlijk niet nodig, maar moeder legt Charlotte uit dat ze de hoeden gewoon verwisseld en als vader daar eenmaal achter is dan is hij er al aan gewend. Ze kopen ook nog een nieuwe kan. Charlotte mag een deel van de boodschappen dragen. Iets later is het Thanksgiving en gaan ze eerst naar de kerk. Omdat het geen zondag is mogen ze daarna spelen en rennen. Hierna eten ze een heerlijk, uitgebreid maal. Charlotte beseft dat ze heel gelukkig is. 

Op een dag wordt Lewis thuis gehouden van school om hout te hakken. Hij wordt ook naar de winkel gestuurd. Als hij thuiskomt heeft hij een brief. Moeder ziet meteen dat deze brief van Will is en iedereen is benieuwd naar wat er instaat. Moeder zegt Lewis om Vader te halen, maar die blijkt niet in de smidse te zijn. Er wordt besloten om af te wachten tot de lunch. Charlotte vindt dat wel jammer, want ze wil dolgraag weten wat er in de brief staat. Moeder is aan het koken en maakt een lekkere pastei. Charlotte is helemaal blij: een brief en een lekkere pastei! Maar het wachten duurt lang. Als vader binnenkomt vraagt moeder hem meteen om de brief te lezen. Vader zegt plagend dat hij zo’n honger heeft dat hij eerst wil eten. De rest van de familie kan niet meer wachten en dus leest moeder de brief voor. Will schrijft dat hij een flinke mars heeft gemaakt. Hij ziet onderweg veel vogels, welke hij tekent voor de kinderen. Het zijn mooie tekeningen en Charlotte kijkt er graag naar.

Dan is het tijd om kaarsen te maken. Nu mag Lydia thuisblijven. Ze is blij als dat alleen bedoeld is om op Mary te passen. Charlotte mag helpen met het maken van kaarsen. Moeder waarschuwt haar wel om voorzichtig te zijn. Voorzichtig staat Charlotte bij het vuur en laat de kaarsenpitten een aantal keren in de pot met talg zakken. Ze kan mooie kaarsen maken. 

Een andere keer deze winter gaat moeder op bezoek bij een Duitse vriendin. Charlotte en Mary mogen mee. De vrouw is erg vriendelijk. Deze keer staat er een mooi versierde kerstboom in het huis. Charlotte staat vol verwondering te kijken. Zelf kent ze alleen maar Hogmanay, maar kerstmis wordt niet gevierd. De lieve vrouw legt uit wat kerst betekent en daarna gaat Charlotte een spel spelen met haar kinderen. 

Dan, op een ochtend in februari, horen ze ineens alle kerkklokken luiden. Het duurt even voor moeder en Charlotte ontdekken dat het betekent dat de oorlog is afgelopen. Iedereen is heel blij en zingt en danst door de straten. De school gaat eerder uit en Lewis komt thuis zonder zijn hoed. Als moeder vraagt waar deze is gebleven, geeft Lewis toe dat hij hem een paar keer hoog in de lucht heeft gegooid en gewoon is vergeten om op te pakken. Maar niemand kan lang boos blijven nu het zo’n groot feest is. Diezelfde avond zegt moeder alle kinderen heel goed aan te kleden. Vader neemt alle kinderen mee naar het centrum van Roxbury. Daar blijkt dat voor elk raam op het plein kaarsen staan en alle huizen dus prachtig zijn verlicht. Dit is omdat de oorlog is afgelopen. 

De volgende dag is de verjaardag van George Washington. Omdat deze man zo belangrijk is in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis, wordt ieder jaar zijn verjaardag gevierd. Vader en Lewis zijn die ochtend al vroeg aan het werk in de smidse, maar willen niet zeggen wat ze aan het doen zijn. Lewis pulkt soms aan een splinter in zijn vinger en moeder waarschuwt hem dat niet te doen. Na de middag gaat moeder met de kinderen naar Roxbury. Daar aangekomen is er feest en veel andere mensen. Dan blijkt er een parade te zijn van allemaal karren met daarop de ambachtslieden van de stad. Charlotte begrijpt dat vader dus ook langs moet komen. Er komen ook bakkers langs die witte broodjes uitdelen. Moeder weet er een te vangen en verdeeld hem. Alles komt langs en als laatste vader en Lewis. Het is een prachtige dag.

Dan volgt er tegenspoed in het gezin Tucker. De splinter in de vinger van Lewis zorgt voor een ontsteking, welke zich uitbreid in het bloed. Vader en moeder zijn erg bezorgd en laten de dokter komen. Lewis is erg ziek en heeft hoge koorts. Iedereen maakt zich zorgen. De dokter legt een verband aan, waardoor de vinger afsterft en afvalt. Verder kunnen ze alleen maar hopen dat de hoge koorts afneemt. Moeder waakt dag en nacht bij Lewis. Alles in het gezin verloopt ineens anders dan Charlotte gewend is. De buurvrouwen brengen het eten, het huishouden doen Lydia en Charlotte een beetje samen. Moeder zingt zielige Schotse liedjes, tot Charlotte het niet langer kan verdragen en moeder vraagt om te stoppen. Dan, eindelijk, op een morgen, wordt Charlotte wakker van een van moeders vrolijke liedjes. Nu weet ze zeker dat Lewis weer helemaal beter zal worden. 

Nu alles weer een beetje terugkeert naar normaal, wordt er ook weer over Will gepraat. Nu de oorlog voorbij is, hoopt Charlotte dat Will snel weer terug komt. Lydia geeft aan de vriendin van Will, Lucy, maar lelijk te vinden. Zij heeft op haar gezicht allemaal littekens van de pokken. Moeder wordt heel erg boos op Lydia, hoe kan ze nu iemand alleen maar beoordelen op het uiterlijk? Lucy heeft haar hele familie verloren aan de pokken, behalve haar vader. Lucy is een heel lief meisje en ze verdient een goede man als Will. Ook Lewis doet boos tegen Lydia en wenst haar de pokken toe. Dan moet moeder toegeven dat ze allemaal dingen hebben gezegd die niet aardig zijn. Ze vertelt hoe zij vroeger als meisje al te vaak onaardige dingen zei om mensen te kwetsen. Vooral tegen haar zus Grisie deed ze heel gemeen. Tot haar moeder ook een keer boos werd en een stok aan haar tong bond, om te leren dat slaan met woorden net zo erg kan zijn als slaan met een stok. Sindsdien probeert ze beter op te letten wat ze zegt. Iedereen begrijpt moeders boodschap en daarna doen de kinderen weer aardiger tegen elkaar. 

Eindelijk gaat Miss Heath trouwen en de familie Tucker wordt uitgenodigd voor de plechtigheid en daarna het diner. Iedereen krijgt een nieuwe jurk of pak en ziet er even netjes uit. Charlotte is enthousiast dat ze erbij mogen zijn. Dan, tijdens het diner, hoort ze moeder vertellen dat, nu de oorlog voorbij is, de vader van Susan weer terugkeert naar Boston en zijn gezin meeneemt. Charlotte hoeft daarna niets meer te eten. Susan is haar beste vriendin en ze wil helemaal niet dat zij teruggaat naar Boston. Charlotte wordt er maar verdrietig van. Geen Will, geen goede vriendin.

Nu het lente is komen eindelijk de soldaten-jongens van Roxbury weer terug. Iedereen is opgetogen, maar diezelfde avond komt een vriend van Will vertellen dat Will niet mee is teruggekeerd. Het nieuws dat de oorlog was afgelopen verspreidde zich langzaam en het bataljon was nog verzeild geraakt in een gevecht met de Engelsen. Tijdens dit gevecht was Will ernstig gewond geraakt aan een been. Deze wond was ook nog eens gaan ontsteken. De dokters wisten niet of Will het zou overleven en of ze zijn been konden redden. Na dit nieuws is de hele familie van streek. Het is onduidelijk of Will nog ooit terugkomt en, zo ja, hoe hij dan terugkomt. 

De zomerschool start weer en Charlotte gaat er heen. Ze ontmoet er Susan weer, al weet ze dat die bijna naar Boston terug gaat. Er is een nieuwe juf, nu Miss Heath getrouwd is, en tot grote verrassing van Charlotte is het Lucy Keator, de vriendin van Will. Ze is aardig en Charlotte is hartstikke blij dat zij haar juf is. Ook juf Keator kent Charlotte nog. Dezelfde middag wil moeder alles weten over juf Keator. 

Niet lang daarna vertrekt Susan. Charlotte en zij moeten allebei huilen bij het afscheid. Gelukkig heeft vader van een klant een kan stroop gekregen, welke ze die avond opeten. Dat verzacht het vertrek van Susan iets. 

Vader neemt een paar dagen vrij om te hooien. Helaas begint het te regenen. Als snel wordt het stortregenen en het begint ook hard te waaien. Als de pannen van het dak worden geblazen, proberen vader en moeder de slaapkamers te redden. Daarna snelt vader naar de stallen, omdat ook daar iets stuk lijkt te zijn. Moeder en Lewis blijven dweilen op zolder en proberen spullen droog te houden. De wind neemt toe en uiteindelijk stuurt moeder alle kinderen naar de kelder. Als ze zelf ook in de kelder komt vertelt ze een verhaal. Er is een vriendelijke vrouw, die onder aan een elfenheuvel woont. Op een dag begint de zon te schijnen en dit blijft zo doorgaan. De man en vrouw vrezen voor hun oogst en uiteindelijk verzucht de vrouw dat ze wilde dat het voor altijd ging regenen. Maar het is natuurlijk niet slim om te zeggen als je bij de elfen in de buurt woont. Het begint meteen te regenen, maar het stopt niet! Dan wordt er op de deur geklopt. Buiten staat een verregende elf die vraagt voor eten en onderdak. Natuurlijk voorziet de vriendelijke vrouw hierin. Maar steeds opnieuw klopt er iemand van het elfenvolk aan. Uiteindelijk raakt het meel en de drank op. Als ze dit tegen de elfen zeggen, zorgen die dat door toverkracht het voedsel onuitputtelijk is. Ook geven de elfen aan hier goed te zitten, lekker droog, lekker eten en buiten een regen die nooit ophoudt. Dan bedenkt de vriendelijke vrouw een plannetje. Ze maakt het eten heel erg vies en zorgt dat ook de drank smerig wordt. Hierna vluchten de elfen weg. Ze zorgen er voor dat de regen stopt, maar vergeten om de toverkracht van het aanvullende eten weg te nemen.

Als het verhaal uit is, is de storm buiten gestopt. Vader heeft tijdens de storm nog alle ramen dicht gespijkerd en in huis is het donker. Gelukkig lijkt de schade nogal mee te vallen. De slaapkamers zijn nat en de meubels zijn vernield, maar veel kan nog gewoon gebruikt worden. Ook in de kamer van vader en moeder staat water op de vloer, maar dit is niet hoog genoeg om echt vervelend te zijn. Het dak moet gemaakt worden, maar de stallen en de smidse staan nog. Alleen de tuin is flink beschadigd. Bomen zijn omgevallen of gewoon verdwenen. Tom en Charlotte zoeken in de modder naar bruikbare spullen. Als Charlotte een zilveren munt vindt, wil ze deze aan vader en moeder gaan laten zien. Bij het naar binnen lopen, loopt ze bijna iemand omver. Het lijkt een oude man met een stok, maar als ze goed kijkt, herkent Charlotte Will. Ze is heel blij hem weer te zien, al lijkt hij dan een houten onderbeen te hebben. Hij vertelt wat er is gebeurd met zijn been en dat hij blij is dat hij nog leeft. Hij hoopt dat vader hem toch weer wil hebben in de smidse, al is het maar op proef. Hij wil graag trouwen met Lucy. De rest van het gezin is ook blij om Will weer te zien en moeder omarmt hem als een verloren zoon. Natuurlijk stemt vader in dat Will weer in de smidse komt werken.

Tekeningen:

De plaatjes staan aan het begin van elk hoofdstuk en zijn algemeen. 

De grotere plaatjes zijn streperig en niet heel duidelijk, maar de tekeningen hebben ook wel wat moois. Er is een plaatje van een meisje dat in een plas water is gevallen, een tekening van een meisje met een boek, een plaatje van een kar met mannen er op in een stad en van grote Charlotte met haar kleine zusje aan de hand. De kleine plaatjes aan het begin van een hoofdstuk zijn: een maiskolf, een hoed, een brief met dierentekeningetjes, hangende kaarsen, een kerstboompje, klokken, een trommel, een bril, een brandende kaars, een lei, een bosje bloemen, een vogel op een tak, een boek met veer en appel, een kan, een rug van een stoel met een nachtmuts, een boom in de wind, een gaslamp en land na de regen. 

Eigen mening:

Alweer een volgend deel in de Charlotte-serie. Het staat allemaal iets verder af van de werkelijkheid, maar is verder wel leuk geschreven.

This is the second part of the Charlotte series.

It starts with the whole Tucker family helping their neighbors to clear the leaves

of the corn. This is called a cornhusking and is a very old tradition. Everyone joins in, the girls make dolls from the corn husks, the boys play and the adults work and laugh. Whoever finds a corn with red, has to let his/her lover kiss him/her. This happens to Miss Heath, but she doesn't mind the kissing that much. Whoever finds a shriveled corn cob, has to slap his/her lover. This happens to someone else in the circle. There is a lot of laughter and there is also a young man who plays the violin. When the work is done, everyone eats together. Mother is often cheerful and likes to sing and dance. She also teases the children a lot. When Lydia comments on Tom, who is trying to keep up with Lewis in running, but can’t win because he is younger, Lydia wonders why a little 8 year old child is bothering to try to win against a 13 year old. Mother teases her that she is so old herself (Lydia is 9). Then father says: “but if Lydia is so old, then you are as old as the hills, Martha”. Everyone laughs at that.

Since it is the middle of winter, the older children Lewis, Lydia and Tom go to school. Martha is allowed to stay home to help mother and for the company. The school is full enough with the older children. Charlotte likes to have mother to herself, although baby Mary is there too. One day mother decides to go to the market. They stop at the forge, where someone says that the war has to end and that the government should not give in so much. When he sees mother he apologizes. Mother says she doesn't mind the language, but she does mind the idea that the government isn't doing a good job. When the man says that Mother is definitely the difficult kind of woman, Father replies that the man should think more carefully about what he says in his shop. After that, they laugh for a while about how Mother is a strong woman with her own opinion, who would even tell the president the truth if it suited her. Then Mother, Charlotte and Mary go shopping. They buy a new hat for Father. Father doesn't really think that's necessary, but Mother explains to Charlotte that she just switches hats and once Father realizes that, he'll be used to it. They buy a new jug. Charlotte is allowed to carry some of the groceries. A little later it is Thanksgiving and they go to church first. Because it is not Sunday they are allowed to play and run afterwards. After this they eat a delicious, extensive meal. Charlotte realizes that she is very happy.

One day Lewis is kept home from school to chop wood. He is also sent to the store. When he comes home he has a letter. Mother immediately sees that this letter is from Will and everyone is curious about what is in it. Mother tells Lewis to get Father, but he turns out not to be in the forge. It is decided to wait until lunch. Charlotte thinks that is a pity, because she really wants to know what is in the letter. Mother is cooking and making a delicious pie. Charlotte is very happy: a letter and a delicious pie! But the wait is long. When Father comes in, Mother immediately asks him to read the letter. Father teasingly says that he is so hungry that he wants to eat first. The rest of the family can't wait any longer and so Mother reads the letter. Will writes that he has made a good walk. He sees many birds on the way, which he draws for the children. They are beautiful drawings and Charlotte likes to look at them.

Then it is time to make candles. Now Lydia is allowed to stay home. She is happy if it is only to look after Mary. Charlotte is allowed to help with the candles. Mother warns her to be careful. Charlotte carefully stands by the fire and lowers the candle wicks into the pot of tallow a few times. She can make beautiful candles.

Another time this winter mother visits a German friend. Charlotte and Mary are allowed to come along. The woman is very friendly. This time there is a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the house. Charlotte looks on in amazement. She only knows Hogmanay herself, but Christmas is not celebrated. The kind woman explains what Christmas means and then Charlotte plays a game with her children.

Then, one morning in February, they suddenly hear all the church bells ringing. It takes a while for mother and Charlotte to discover that it means that the war is over. Everyone is very happy and sings and dances through the streets. School ends early and Lewis comes home without his hat. When mother asks where it has gone, Lewis admits that he has thrown it high in the air a few times and simply forgot to pick it up. But no one can stay angry for long now that it is such a big party. That same evening mother tells all the children to dress very nicely. Father takes all the children to the center of Roxbury. There it turns out that there are candles in front of every window on the square and all the houses are beautifully lit. This is because the war is over.

The next day is George Washington's birthday. Because this man is so important in American history, his birthday is celebrated every year. Father and Lewis are already working early that morning in the forge, but do not want to say what they are doing. Lewis sometimes picks at a splinter in his finger and mother warns him not to do that. In the afternoon mother takes the children to Roxbury. When they arrive there is a party and many other people. Then there appears to be a parade of carts with all the craftsmen of the city on them. Charlotte understands that father must also come along. Bakers also come along who hand out white rolls. Mother manages to catch one and distributes it. Everyone comes along and finally father and Lewis. It is a beautiful day.

Then there is adversity in the Tucker family. The splinter in Lewis' finger causes an infection, which spreads into the blood. Father and mother are very worried and call the doctor. Lewis is very ill and has a high fever. Everyone is worried. The doctor applies a bandage, which causes the finger to die and fall off. They can only hope that the high fever will go down. Mother watches over Lewis day and night. Everything in the family suddenly goes differently than Charlotte is used to. The neighbours bring the food, Lydia and Charlotte do the housework a bit together. Mother sings sad Scottish songs, until Charlotte can no longer bear it and asks mother to stop. Then, finally, one morning, Charlotte wakes up to one of mother's cheerful songs. Now she knows for sure that Lewis will get completely better again. Now that everything is returning to normal, people are talking about Will again. Now that the war is over, Charlotte hopes that Will will return soon. Lydia says that she finds Will's girlfriend, Lucy, ugly. She has scars all over her face from smallpox. Mother gets very angry with Lydia, how can she judge someone based on their appearance? Lucy lost her entire family to smallpox, except for her father. Lucy is a very sweet girl and she deserves a good husband like Will. Lewis also gets angry with Lydia and wishes her smallpox. Then mother has to admit that they all said things that were not nice. She tells how she used to say unkind things as a girl to hurt people. She was especially mean to her sister Grisie. Until her mother got angry one time and tied a stick to her tongue, to teach her that hitting with words can be just as bad as hitting with a stick. Since then, she tries to pay more attention to what she says. Everyone understands mother's message and after that the children are nicer to each other again. Finally Miss Heath is getting married and the Tucker family is invited to the ceremony and then to dinner. Everyone gets a new dress or suit and looks equally neat. Charlotte is excited that they can be there. Then, during dinner, she hears her mother tell her that, now that the war is over, Susan's father is returning to Boston and taking his family with him. Charlotte doesn't have to eat anything after that. Susan is her best friend and she doesn't want her to go back to Boston at all. Charlotte just gets sad about it. No Will, no good friend.

Now that it's spring, the soldier boys from Roxbury finally return. Everyone is excited, but that same evening a friend of Will's comes to tell her that Will hasn't returned. The news that the war was over spread slowly and the battalion had gotten involved in a battle with the English. During this battle, Will had been seriously wounded in his leg. This wound had also become infected. The doctors didn't know if Will would survive and if they could save his leg. After this news, the whole family is upset. It is unclear whether Will will ever return and, if so, how he will return.

Summer school starts again and Charlotte goes there. She meets Susan again, although she knows that she is almost going back to Boston. There is a new teacher, now that Miss Heath is married, and to Charlotte's great surprise it is Lucy Keator, Will's girlfriend. She is nice and Charlotte is very happy that she is her teacher. Miss Keator also knows Charlotte. That same afternoon, mother wants to know everything about Miss Keator.

Not long after that Susan leaves. Charlotte and she both have to cry when they say goodbye. Fortunately, father has received a can of syrup from a customer, which they eat that evening. That softens Susan's departure somewhat.

Father takes a few days off to make hay. Unfortunately it starts to rain. It quickly becomes a downpour and the wind also starts to blow hard. When the tiles are blown off the roof, father and mother try to save the bedrooms. Then father rushes to the stables, because something seems to be broken there too. Mother and Lewis continue mopping in the attic and trying to keep things dry. The wind increases and eventually mother sends all the children to the cellar. When she herself comes to the cellar she tells a story. There is a friendly woman who lives at the bottom of an elf hill. One day the sun starts to shine and it continues like this. The man and woman fear for their harvest and eventually the woman sighs that she wishes it would rain forever. But of course it is not smart to say that when you live near the elves. It starts to rain immediately, but it does not stop! Then there is a knock on the door. Outside stands a rained-on elf who asks for food and shelter. Of course the friendly woman provides this. But again and again someone from the elf people knocks. Eventually the flour and drink run out. When they tell this to the elves, they ensure that the food is inexhaustible by magic. The elves also say that they are fine here, nice and dry, good food and outside a rain that never stops. Then the kind woman comes up with a plan. She makes the food very dirty and makes sure the drinks are dirty too. After this the elves run away. They make the rain stop, but forget to remove the magic of the additional food.

When the story ends, the storm outside has stopped. Father has nailed all the windows shut during the storm and it is dark in the house. Fortunately, the damage does not seem to be too bad. The bedrooms are wet and the furniture is destroyed, but much can still be used. There is also water on the floor in father and mother's room, but this is not high enough to be really annoying. The roof needs to be repaired, but the stables and the forge are still standing. Only the garden is badly damaged. Trees have fallen over or simply disappeared. Tom and Charlotte search the mud for useful items. When Charlotte finds a silver coin, she wants to show it to father and mother. When she walks inside, she almost knocks someone over. It looks like an old man with a stick, but when she looks closely, Charlotte recognizes Will. She is very happy to see him again, even though he seems to have a wooden lower leg. He tells what happened to his leg and that he is glad that he is still alive. He hopes that father will want him back in the forge, even if it is only on a trial basis. He would like to marry Lucy. The rest of the family is also glad to see Will again and mother embraces him like a prodigal son. Of course, father agrees that Will will come back to work in the forge.

The larger pictures are streaky and not very clear, but the drawings also have something beautiful. There is a picture of a girl who has fallen into a puddle of water, a drawing of a girl with a book, a picture of a cart with men on it in a city and of big Charlotte holding her little sister's hand. The small pictures at the beginning of a chapter are: a corncob, a hat, a letter with animal drawings, hanging candles, a Christmas tree, clocks, a drum, glasses, a burning candle, a slate, a bunch of flowers, a bird on a branch, a book with a feather and an apple, a jug, a back of a chair with a nightcap, a tree in the wind, a gas lamp and land after the rain.

Another part in the Charlotte series. It is all a bit further removed from reality, but is otherwise nicely written.
