Samenvatting:

Dit vierde boek van de Caroline-serie begint er mee dat het gezin zich klaarmaakt om naar een openbare preek in de open lucht te gaan. Caroline, die als enige weet dat Mr. Holbrook moeder ten huwelijk heeft gevraagd, ziet in alles tekenen dat het huwelijk vandaag gaat plaatsvinden. Het hele gezin vindt het uitstapje naar Concord leuk, maar de openbare preek valt erg tegen. Hoewel ze het gezin Kellog tegenkomen, verlaten ze toch voortijdig het veld van de preek. Er wordt veel geschreeuwd en opzwepend gepraat. Caroline voelt zich heel ongelukkig, als dan ook nog blijkt dat ze een zondaar zou zijn omdat ze het gesprek tussen moeder en Mr. Holbrook heeft gehoord, dan wordt ze helemaal bang. Iedereen is blij als ze weer naar huis gaan, waar ze in de rivier gaan zwemmen en picknicken. Die avond voelt Caroline zich zo rot, dat ze moeder vertelt dat ze het aanzoek van Mr. Holbrook heeft gehoord. Moeder vertelt Caroline dat ze geen zondaar is, en dat er inderdaad een huwelijk gaat komen. De volgende dag komt het hele gezin het te weten. Vlak hierna wordt het huwelijk voltrokken, gewoon bij de blokhut op een gewone woensdag. Er wordt extra lekker gegeten en dan is er weer een man in huis. Iedereen is er blij mee, behalve Henry. Caroline besluit al snel om Mr. Holbrook “Pa” te noemen. Uiteindelijk komt het huwelijk de familie Kellog ter ore en die komen als kadootjes een koe en eten brengen. Nu helpt Mr. Holbrook de jongens in het bos. Hij heeft extra land gekocht en er moeten nog meer bomen gerooid worden en, ook al is het laat, extra gewassen gepland worden. Caroline verzorgt inmiddels de kippen en de ganzen. De boerderij groeit. Mr. Holbrook gaat helpen aan het bouwen van een dam, zodat in Concord een molen kan worden gebouwd. Hoewel het Henry is verboden ook te gaan helpen, doet hij dat toch. De kinderen in het gezin weten het allemaal, maar verraden Henry niet. Natuurlijk komt Mr. Holbrook er toch achter en moeder en hij zijn erg boos op allemaal. Daarna onderneemt Mr. Holbrook met Henry een tocht naar Watertown om dingen te ruilen en te kopen. Hierna verbetert de relatie tussen Henry en “Pa”. Helaas nemen ze cholera mee terug naar de blokhut en iedereen wordt ziek, behalve Joseph en Thomas. Ze proberen zo goed mogelijk iedereen in het gezin te helpen. Uiteindelijk haalt Mr. Kellog Grootmoeder op in Milwaukee om het gezin te helpen. Met grootmoeders hulp komt iedereen er weer bovenop. Dan blijkt dat een vroege vorst de oogst bedreigt en het is juist een goede oogst. Ondanks dat iedereen nog heel slap is, beginnen ze de oogst binnen te halen. Maar het lijkt een eindeloze klus nu ze allemaal zo zwak zijn. Weer komt er hulp van Mr. Kellog en zijn mannen die binnen een dag de oogst binnen halen. Er is dan zoveel dat het nauwelijks in de blokhut past. Iedereen is blij en dankbaar. Dan is het weer kerstmis. Het hele gezin krijgt schaatsen en ze gaan schaatsen op het meer bij de molen. Ze worden uitgenodigd om iets te drinken bij het gezin Kellog. Caroline is diep onder de indruk van het mooie huis. Toch is ze ook blij als ze later weer met haar familie in de eigen blokhut is.

Tekeningen:

Er staan weinig plaatjes in het boek, alleen boven de hoofdstukken. Dat zijn algemene plaatjes, zoals het hoofd van een kalfje, een stel schaatsen, besneeuwde pompoenen, een kaars, een tafel met etensresten, ganzen, een molen met waterrad, kalfje bij opkomende zon, een bij, kleren aan de waslijn, een cake, een mondharmonica en een vogel. 

Eigen mening:

Ook weer een mooi boekje uit de Caroline-serie. Gewoon leuk om te lezen, gezellig, warm, liefelijk. En toch ook wel over een “kinder-probleem” en serieuze zaken. Er staan weinig "gevoelige" tekeningen in, maar de kleine tekeningetjes zijn wel mooi getekend.

Summary:

This fourth book in the Caroline series begins with the family getting ready to go to a public sermon in the open air. Caroline, who is the only one who knows that Mr. Holbrook has proposed to Mother, sees in everything that the wedding is going to take place today. The whole family enjoys the trip to Concord, but the public sermon is very disappointing. Although they meet the Kellog family, they still leave the field of the sermon prematurely. There is a lot of shouting and stirring talk. Caroline feels very unhappy, when it also turns out that she is a sinner because she heard the conversation between Mother and Mr. Holbrook, then she becomes completely scared. Everyone is happy when they go home, where they swim in the river and have a picnic. That evening Caroline feels so bad that she tells Mother that she heard Mr. Holbrook's proposal. Mother tells Caroline that she is not a sinner, and that there will indeed be a wedding. The next day the whole family finds out. Shortly after, the wedding takes place, just at the cabin on a regular Wednesday. They eat extra well and there is a man in the house again. Everyone is happy, except Henry. Caroline soon decides to call Mr. Holbrook “Pa”. Eventually, the Kellog family hears about the wedding and they come with presents as a cow and food. Now Mr. Holbrook helps the boys in the forest. He has bought extra land and more trees have to be cleared and, even though it is late, extra crops have to be planted. Caroline now takes care of the chickens and geese. The farm is growing. Mr. Holbrook is going to help build a dam so that a mill can be built in Concord. Although Henry is forbidden to help, he does so anyway. The children in the family all know about it, but do not betray Henry. Of course, Mr. Holbrook finds out anyway and he and mother are very angry with everyone. Afterwards, Mr. Holbrook takes Henry on a trip to Watertown to trade and buy things. After this, the relationship between Henry and “Pa” improves. Unfortunately, they bring cholera back to the cabin and everyone gets sick, except Joseph and Thomas. They try to help everyone in the family as best they can. Eventually, Mr. Kellog picks up Grandmother in Milwaukee to help the family. With Grandmother's help, everyone gets better again. Then it turns out that an early frost threatens the harvest and it is actually a good harvest. Despite the fact that everyone is still very weak, they start to harvest the harvest. But it seems like an endless job now that they are all so weak. Help comes again from Mr. Kellog and his men who harvest the harvest within a day. There is then so much food that it barely fits in the cabin. Everyone is happy and grateful. Then it is Christmas again. The whole family gets skates and they go skating on the lake near the mill. They are invited to have a drink at the Kellog family. Caroline is deeply impressed by the beautiful house. Yet she is also happy when she is later with her family in her own cabin.

Drawings:

There are few pictures in the book, only above the chapters. These are general pictures, such as the head of a calf, a pair of skates, snow-covered pumpkins, a candle, a table with leftovers, geese, a mill with a water wheel, a calf at sunrise, a bee, clothes on a clothesline, a cake, a harmonica and a bird.

Own opinion:

Another beautiful book from the Caroline series. Just fun to read, cozy, warm, sweet. And yet also about a "children's problem" and serious matters. There are few "sensitive" drawings in it, but the small drawings are beautifully drawn.
