Samenvatting:

Dit boek begint met het vertrek van de familie Wilder uit De Smet naar het land van de grote rode appel. Als eerste schrijft Rose een korte samenvatting van de 7 jaar hiervoor die ze met haar ouders op de prairie woonde (dat ze een periode bij haar andere grootouders heeft gewoond en een jaar in Florida, laat ze weg). Ze vertelt over de droogte en de zware tijd op de prairie, maar ook dat ze zelf naar school mocht en ijs mocht halen voor een paar dames in de buurt. Ze was vaak bij opa en oma Ingalls. Almanzo bracht waren rond en Laura werkte als naaister. Zo verdiende ze "een biljet van 100 dollar" om hun nieuwe leven mee te beginnen. De voorbereidingen voor de reis werden gemaakt. Almanzo verbouwde een rijtuig tot een soort huifkar, Laura verzamelde eten. Ze zouden samen reizen met het gezin Cooley, die met twee grote huifkarren ook naar Missouri zouden reizen. Toen namen ze afscheid van Pa, Ma, Mary, Carrie en Grace. 

Het dagboekje dat Laura bijhield tijdens de reis begint op 17 juli 1894. Ze vertelt over de dingen die ze onderweg zien, zoals de oogst en hoe deze erbij staat. Ze vertelt ook een keer dat ze is gaan zwemmen met Mevrouw Cooley en de jongens Paul en George en Rose. Ze heeft het vaak over de temperatuur in de huifkar, tot ze de thermometer verliezen. Ze vertelt het als een van de veulens wegloopt en Almanzo deze moet vangen. Ze vertelt het als ze door een grote stad reizen waar asfalt op de weg ligt, een curiositeit. Vaak schrijft ze over waar ze kamperen. Op 15 augustus vinden ze een zwak hondje langs de weg, ze nemen hem mee en noemen hem Fido. Op 30 augustus komen ze aan in Mansfield en geeft Laura een beschrijving van de plaats.

Hierna neemt Rose het verhaal weer over. Hoe ze een kampeerplaats vinden en hoe Almanzo op zoek gaat naar land. De Cooleys gaan werken in een hotel en verlaten de kampeerplaats. Op een dag heeft Almanzo iets gevonden en kijkt Rose toe hoe Laura zich netjes kleed voor het bezoek aan de bank. Als ze het biljet van 100 dollar wil pakken, blijkt het te zijn verdwenen. Rose weet goed te beschrijven hoe het voelt als ze wordt beschuldigt van er mee spelen en de teleurstelling die ze voelt bij haar ouders. Uiteindelijk is Rose degene die het biljet terugvindt en kan het land alsnog gekocht worden. Rose geeft een beschrijving van het beboste, heuvelachtige stuk land met slechts een simpele blokhut. Zodra ze zijn gearriveerd komt er een man langs. Hij vraagt voor werk en Almanzo besluit om hem aan te nemen om me hout te hakken. Hij deelt het laatste gekochte vlees met de man. De volgende dag gaan Almanzo en de man aan het werk op het land en Laura en Rose in de blokhut.

Het boek heeft geen plaatjes, maar wel heel veel foto's. Foto's van Almanzo, Laura en Rose. Foto's van de steden die zo tijdens de reis door zijn gegaan, van bruggen die ze gepasseerd zijn. Ook foto’s van Mansfield en Kansas City, Topeka en Marysville,  Een foto van de lessenaar van Laura en foto's van Rocky Ridge in latere jaren. En verder een kaartje van de reis die ze hebben gemaakt. En een foto van Rose met haar ezeltje, Almanzo bij een hut, Laura in het ravijn, Almanzo in een buggy. Ook staat er een foto in het boekje van Pa’s huis in De Smet en van Calumet Avenue, De Smet en van de naaidoos van Laura gemaakt door Almanzo.

Eigen mening:

Hetzelfde boek als “onderweg”, in het Engels Met vrij donkere foto’s helaas, maar wel bijzondere foto’s die je niet vaak ziet.

Summary:

This book begins with the departure of the Wilder family from De Smet to the land of the big red apple. First, Rose writes a short summary of the 7 years she lived on the prairie with her parents (she leaves out the fact that she lived with her other grandparents for a period and in Florida for a year). She tells about the drought and the hard times on the prairie, but also that she was allowed to go to school and get ice cream for a few ladies in the neighborhood. She was often with Grandpa and Grandma Ingalls. Almanzo delivered goods and Laura worked as a seamstress. In this way she earned "a 100 dollar bill" to start their new life with. Preparations for the journey were made. Almanzo converted a carriage into a kind of covered wagon, Laura collected food. They would travel together with the Cooley family, who would also travel to Missouri with two large covered wagons. Then they said goodbye to Pa, Ma, Mary, Carrie and Grace. The diary that Laura kept during the journey begins on July 17, 1894. She tells about the things they see along the way, such as the harvest and how it is doing. She also tells about a time when she went swimming with Mrs. Cooley and the boys Paul and George and Rose. She often talks about the temperature in the covered wagon, until they lose the thermometer. She tells about it when one of the foals runs away and Almanzo has to catch it. She tells about when they travel through a big city where there is asphalt on the road, a curiosity. She often writes about where they camp. On August 15, they find a weak little dog on the road, they take him with them and name him Fido. On August 30, they arrive in Mansfield and Laura gives a description of the place.

After this, Rose takes over the story again. How they find a camping place and how Almanzo goes looking for land. The Cooleys go to work in a hotel and leave the camping place. One day, Almanzo finds something and Rose watches Laura dress up for the visit to the bank. When she goes to get the $100 bill, it appears to have disappeared. Rose describes well how it feels when she is accused of playing with it and the disappointment she feels with her parents. In the end, Rose is the one who finds the bill and the land can still be bought. Rose describes the wooded, hilly piece of land with only a simple log cabin. As soon as they arrive, a man comes by. He asks for work and Almanzo decides to hire him to chop wood. He shares the last of the meat he bought with the man. The next day, Almanzo and the man go to work in the fields and Laura and Rose in the log cabin.

The book has no pictures, but it does have a lot of photos. Photos of Almanzo, Laura and Rose. Photos of the cities that they passed through during the journey, of bridges that they passed. Also photos of Mansfield and Kansas City, Topeka and Marysville, A photo of Laura's desk and photos of Rocky Ridge in later years. And also a map of the trip they made. And a photo of Rose with her donkey, Almanzo at a cabin, Laura in the ravine, Almanzo in a buggy. There is also a photo in the book of Pa's house in De Smet and of Calumet Avenue, De Smet and of Laura's sewing box made by Almanzo.

Own opinion:

The same book as "onderweg", in English with rather dark photos unfortunately, but special photos that you don't see often.
